IBOC: A Bank That Prints Money — But Watch the Credit
International Bancshares Corporation | NASDAQ: IBOC | Published 10/13/2026
Introduction
International Bancshares has one of the most enviable operating profiles I’ve encountered in my work covering community banks: an efficiency ratio near 37%, a return on assets above 2.4%, virtually zero interest rate risk, and a capital fortress that most banks can only dream about. It is, by almost every profitability and balance-sheet measure, an elite franchise.
And yet the stock currently trades at a discount to tangible fair value — something that rarely happens to banks of this quality.
The reason is credit. In the most recent period (April 2026), nonaccrual loans surged to 3.0% of total loans — nearly three times the upper bound of the peer range. Classified loans are above-peer. And allowance coverage of classified credits has thinned to 0.53x, well below the peer floor.
The question for IBOC is whether this is a manageable bump or the beginning of a more serious deterioration. The answer to that question will likely determine whether this turns into one of the better bank investments of the next two years.
Below the paywall, I walk through all seven categories of my proprietary Bank Statistics Trend analysis, with peer universe comparisons going back to September 2023. The interactive chart at the bottom of this post lets you see exactly where IBOC lands relative to its peers — period by period, metric by metric.
