LCNB Corp (LCNB): Average Earnings, Above-Average Risk

A $2.2 billion Ohio community bank with a wealth management edge, a pristine credit book, and a risk profile that may be flying under the radar.

Introduction

LCNB National Bank earns its profitability the hard way — not through aggressive leverage or rate risk, but through a structurally cheap liability base (24.63% non-interest bearing deposits, well above the peer range of 18–22%) and a well-developed wealth management arm that pushes noninterest income to 16.21% of total revenue, far above the 10–14% peer range. These twin advantages are largely offset by an elevated noninterest expense load (~51% of revenue), producing a final ROA of 1.06% — right at the peer median.

The catch: beneath an average earnings headline lies above-average risk in interest rate, liquidity, and capital dimensions. A repricing ratio one-third the peer norm signals significant liability sensitivity. An outsized goodwill position (4.06% of assets) and a steep fair-value discount on loans push tangible fair-value equity well below the peer range. The resulting price-to-TFV of 2.26x sits above the peer range of 1.56–1.93x. For average earnings and average headline pricing, investors are absorbing above-average risk — a trade-off the market may be underpricing.
